Privacy Policy for Unplug
Effective Date: June 15, 2025
Our Commitment to Your Privacy
Hello! Thank you for choosing Unplug. As the sole developer behind this app, my goal is to build a tool that genuinely helps you manage your digital life, and that starts with respecting your privacy. This policy is written to be as clear and straightforward as possible.
Unplug is designed with a “privacy-first” philosophy. This means we are committed to collecting the absolute minimum data necessary for the app to function. Storing and managing vast amounts of personal user data is not only a huge responsibility but also, for a one-person team, completely out of budget. Therefore, the app is architected to keep your most sensitive information right where it belongs: on your device.
This policy explains what information is collected, why it’s needed, and how you remain in control.
1. Data That Stays On Your Device (Local Data)
Unplug requires several special permissions to provide its core features. The data accessed through these permissions is processed entirely on your device and is never uploaded, stored, or transferred to our servers or any third party. You are in full control and can revoke these permissions at any time through your device’s settings.
Here’s a breakdown of the permissions and why they are necessary:
a. Usage Stats Permission
- Why we need it: To track your app usage duration, display screen time reports, and enforce the daily time limits you set for specific apps.
- What it does: Allows Unplug to see which apps you are using and for how long.
- Our Promise: This usage history is only used to generate your personal reports and power the app’s features locally. It never leaves your phone.
b. Accessibility Service Permission
- Why we need it: This is a powerful permission needed for our most advanced blocking features.
- What it does:
- To identify when you are viewing specific in-app content (like YouTube Shorts or Instagram Reels) so we can block them as you’ve configured.
- To detect the URL in your browser to block websites you’ve added to your blocklist.
- Our Promise: Unplug only uses this service to check for the specific apps and websites you have chosen to block. We do not log your general activity, text input, or any other personal information through this service. All processing happens on your device.
c. Notification Listener Permission
- Why we need it: To help you manage distracting notifications.
- What it does: Allows Unplug to read notifications as they arrive, and if they are from an app you’ve chosen to block, we can intercept and store them for you to review later at a time you choose.
- Our Promise: The content of your notifications is stored locally on your device in a “deferred” list for your viewing. This information is never sent to our servers.
2. Data We Collect On Our Servers (Remote Data)
We only collect a small amount of data on our servers, which is essential for account management, core app functionality, and improving the service.
- Account Information: When you sign in (e.g., with Google), we store your email address and a unique user ID. This is used to identify your account, manage your subscription status, and allow you to sign in on different devices.
- Subscription History: If you purchase a subscription, the transaction is handled by the Google Play Store. We receive a confirmation token to verify your purchase and unlock premium features, but we do not see or store your credit card details or other sensitive payment information.
- App Crash Reports: If the app crashes, anonymized or pseudonymized reports may be sent to our servers (via services like Firebase Crashlytics). These reports contain technical information about the crash (like device type, OS version, and the point of failure in the code) but do not include your personal data. This helps us find and fix bugs to improve the app.
3. Data We Provide To Your Device
To enhance your experience, the Unplug app may occasionally download pre-configured data from our servers. This includes:
- Suggested Blocklists: Lists of commonly distracting websites or apps that you can choose to enable.
- Configuration Data: Information required for the app to function correctly, such as developer contact details or links to our Terms of Service and this Privacy Policy.
4. Third-Party Services
Unplug uses a few trusted third-party services to provide its functionality. These services have their own privacy policies, and we encourage you to review them.
- Firebase (by Google): Used for user authentication (signing in), crash reporting (Crashlytics), and remote configuration. Firebase Privacy Policy
- Supabase: Used as a backend to store non-sensitive data, such as the pre-made website lists. Supabase Privacy Policy
- Google Sign-In: To allow you to securely sign into the app with your Google account. Google Privacy Policy
5. Your Rights and Control
You are in control of your data.
- Revoking Permissions: You can revoke any of the permissions granted to Unplug at any time through your Android device’s Settings app. Please note that revoking a permission may cause features that depend on it to stop working.
- Data Deletion: You can request the deletion of your account and associated server-side data (email and subscription history) by contacting us.
6. Children’s Privacy
Unplug is not intended for use by children under the age of 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we become aware that a child has provided us with personal information, we will take steps to delete such information.
7. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy within the app and updating the “Effective Date” at the top. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
